Turbidity Study
In 2024, the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed Association was selected to receive a $1,500 grant by BHE GT&S in partnership with the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy to purchase a turbidity meter. Turbidity measures the amount of suspended solids in a body of water. A high turbidity can indicate sediment runoff from development, clearing, etc. Sediment is the number one polluter of PA waterways. High turbidity levels and related sedimentation and siltation can harm habitat for fish and other aquatic life. Volunteers will use this meter to measure turbidity once a month at 20 locations in the watershed, during wet and dry weather, over the next year. Below are the results from each survey.
